Can we be sure

Looking back

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.

Romans 1:16-17

This claim of salvation

 Our common problem

There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Romans 3:22-26

 God’s common grace

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Romans 5:1

The benefits and call to obedience

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

Expecting the conquering Lord

Getting the suffering Lord

Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

‘Holy Scripture contains all things we need for salvation, so that whatever is not read in it, or can’t be proved from it, is not to be required of any person to be believed as a doctrine or necessary for them to be saved.

 The cure

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

One or the Other

Mark 6: 1-44

Roger Cunningham

The gathered crowds.

  • The apostles coming back together after being sent out to tell the people to repent

Those who didn't recognise Jesus as King - deny and reject

The Compassionate Shepherd

  • leads and protects
  • God describes His chosen leaders as shepherds and His people are described as like sheep.

2 Kings, 2 Meals, 2 very different outcomes

  • Herod kills John the Baptist to protect his honour
  • Jesus has compassion and mercy, feeding the 5000 and having more left over than needed

The King foreshadowed by Moses

So many don't recognise, but instead reject Jesus, no matter how much they are told they still reject Him

We are called to:

  • Recognise
  • Repent
  • Rejoice
  • Repeat

Mark 1:15 - preach repentance

Going the wrong way because we don't have the right directions.

Trying to follow God properly

Let God lead your fully devoted life.

Moses says that people will walk away from God

Deuteronomy 32

1) God is Totally Devoted to His people

Deuteronomy 32:7-15 - God intimately cares for Israel

2) His people are totally un-devoted to God

3) God punishes the wrong done to Him

God is a just God

4) God will remember His people because He is Totally Devoted to them.

Deuteronomy 32: 26, 39-42

No other god can be relied on except the one True God

Deuteronomy ends on such a low to show how much God is needed

1) Accept that you can't follow God on your own - rely on God

2) Ask God to guide us - Galatians 5:19-21, 22-26

The Curse of God for Disobedience

Deuteronomy 28:15-19 - Curse everywhere, on everyone at all times

  • Not based on works - covenant based on grace
    • Obedience of faith in God thanks to grace

2 Problems

  • Presumption- Deuteronomy 29:19
  • Works of the Law - not obedience based on faith but of themselves
  • Galatians 3 - Obedience to the works of the Law brings curse because it relies on trusting yourself not your faith in God
  • Galatians 3:10 & 11

Jesus became a curse for us by taking our curse to free us and bring us into relationship and faith in God. Galatians 3:14
